Just eight points separated Johnston and Waukee at the Fort Dodge Invitational on Oct. 10.
The Dragons put their scoring five in the top 12 to edge the Warriors, 47-55.
Ryan Tunink was fourth overall for Waukee, finishing in 15:54. Brennan Borgestad was ninth in 16:28, Mohad Awan was 11th in 16:32, Noah Larrison was 15th in 16:40 and Austin Krohnke was 16th in 16:42. Rounding out the senior-laden lineup were Michael Fellers, who was 26th, and Nathan Scaffer, who was 32nd.
The Waukee girls finished third with 81 points, trailing Ames (68) and Urbandale (75). Erika Lewis was fifth overall, finishing ing 15:08, followed by Rachel Brush (10th, 15:21), Jordan Allen (19th, 15:36), Kayla Sabotin (20th, 15:37) and Maggie Laird (27th, 15:43). Maddie Anderson (30th) and Bri Young (46th) rounded out the lineup.
The Warriors will get another shot at their Central Iowa Conference counterparts on Thursday at the conference meet in Ames.
