The Waukee boys’ cross country team came away with a third-place team finish at the Central Iowa Conference meet in Ames on Oct. 17.
With a score of 78, the third-place finish matched Waukee’s No. 3 ranking. Second-ranked Johnston won with a score of 45, while 12th-ranked Ames vaulted to second place with a score of 74.
The Warriors ran with six seniors and one freshman, Kevin Kato. Ryan Tunink was sixth overall in 16 minutes, 21 seconds, while Brennan Borgestad was 10th in 16:33 and Austin Krohnke was 13th in 16:38. Waukee locked in its team score with a 23rd-place finish from Noah Larrison in 16:50, and a 26th-place finish from Mohad Awan in 16:56. Michael Fellers was 30th and Kato was 41st.
The Waukee girls finished fourth with a score of 93, trailing Dowling Catholic (67), Ames (74) and Johnston (75), but narrowly edging Urbandale (98). Junior Erika Lewis and sophomore Rachel Brush finished seventh and eighth in 14:52 and 14:53. Jordan Allen was 17th in 15:10, Maddie Anderson was 27th in 15:30 and Maggie Laird was 34th in 15:38.
Also running were Kayla Sabotin, who was 36th, and Jenny Brown, who was 37th.
After several years of hosting its own state-qualifying meet, Waukee will hit the road on Thursday and travel west to Council Bluffs for a Class 4A qualifier hosted by Lewis Central. The field also includes Johnston, Des Moines Roosevelt, Council Bluffs Lincoln, Council Bluffs Jefferson, Sioux City East, Sioux City North and Sioux City West.
