Waukee topped Johnston and Norwalk in a triangular meet at Jester Park Golf Course in Johnston on Monday.
The Warriors recorded a 158, edging Johnston’s 159 and beating Norwalk, which finished with a 185, handily.
Connor Littlefield fired a 38, tying Johnston’s Jake Campbell for medalist honors. Parker Howe added a 39, Aaron DeNucci finished with a 40 and Tripp Kinney added a 41.
The meet was originally schedule to go 18 holes, but because of the 100-plus degree heat index, it was shortened to nine. It also went to a shotgun start in order to have the players on the course for as little as possible.
“All in all, we were happy to get the win and remain undefeated, but it was very close,” said coach John Kotz. “It’s always a challenge playing a nine-hole dual meet against a good team. Johnston is a good team and they play well on their home course.”
The varsity roster is still wide open and Kotz has many deserving candidates from which to choose. The junior varsity squad also finished with a 158 on Monday, including a tournament-best 37 from senior Luke Fegen.
Tom McLaughlin and Andrew O’Brien added 40s, and Logan Floyd finished with a 41.
“We have a good problem with having some depth on our team,” Kotz said. “But we have to find a consistent six or seven players to play varsity as we head into the meat of our schedule coming up in September.”
