Waukee wins at regional meet, sends large group to state

The Waukee boys’ and girls’ track teams have been very successful throughout the last decade, and this year is no different. Both teams took first place at the regional meet in Johnston and have sent 26 boys teams and individuals and 27 girls teams and individuals to the state tournament, which will be held this Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Talia Buss qualified for state in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash finishing first in the 100 meter dash at Johnston and getting an at-large bid in the 200 meter dash. Gabby Gray got sixth in the 100 meter dash at Johnston and still got an at-large bid for the state meet while Gabi Gaines qualified for the 200 meter dash.
Erika Lewis took first place for the Warriors in the 800 meter run, securing her spot at state and 10 points for the Warriors at the regional meet. Rachel Brush and Maggie Laird both qualified for the 1500 meter run.
Brush also qualified for the 3000 meter run with Maddie Anderson of Waukee. Danielle Modrell and Mallory Smith both qualified for the 100 meter hurdles at the state meet.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Lewis and Mary Kate Gray will be competing at state for the Warriors. The Warriors also qualified for all seven relay races, with the shuttle hurdle relay team, the 4x100 meter relay team, the 4x200 meter relay team, the 4x400 meter relay team, the 4x800 meter relay team, the sprint medley relay team and the distance medley relay team all qualifying for state through the regional meet.
In girls field events, Lauren Nelson and Katie Carpenter qualified to compete in the high jump at state, while Shaye Witte qualified to compete in the long jump. Erin Bramble and Caroline Slaughter both qualified for the discus throw and the shot put throw.
For the boys, Tyler Hunke qualified for the 100 meter dash while AJ Allen and Corbin Lowe both qualified for the 200 meter dash and Ross Vogel qualified for the 400 meter dash. In the 800 meter dash, the Warriors will be represented by Austin Krohnke.
Krohnke will also run in the 1600 meter run along with Ryan Tunink of Waukee at the state meet. Tunink will also run in the 3200 meter run.
Jared and Josh Brdicko qualified to run in the 110 meter hurdles while Noah Larrison and Pat Gray qualified to run in the 400 meter hurdles.
Just like the Waukee girls, the Warrior boys qualified for every relay race.
In the field events Nathan Keck and Andrew Cutler qualified to compete in the high jump while Hunke and Robert Primrose qualified for the long jump. Erik Nelson and Ross Reynolds both qualified for the discus throw and the shot put throw.
The state meet begins this Thursday at Drake Stadium with 4A competition beginning at 9 a.m.
