The Woodward-Granger boys’ and girls’ track teams had many competitors at the state track meet last weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The Hawks’ girls team took 30th overall with nine team points while the boys took 20th with a team score of 11 points.
Abby Musser, who also competed at the state meet last season, looked like she was on her way to winning the state crown in the 400 meter hurdles as she was in the lead going down the home stretch, but she tripped on the final hurdle and fell down. She got back up and finished in time to still take third place with a time of 1:06.81.
Musser also took sixth in the 100 meter hurdles and ninth in the 100 meter dash and helped the Hawks’ 4x800 meter relay team to a 16th place finish.
Kaleb Noel of Woodward-Granger, took fourth place overall in the 400 meter hurdles after winning section two with a time of 56.19. Even though he was not crowned state champion at the meet, he said getting to compete at the meet as a junior was a “dream come true” for him and said that the result was “amazing.”
“I never thought I could do something like that,” Noel said after the race.
Noel is only a junior this season.
“Next year I’m coming back and I’m going for a better placing,” Noel said.
Austin Olesen finished in 12th place in the 200 meter dash while Marshall Nieland got 15th in the 400 meter dash. Derick Morgan took 23rd in the 3200 meter run while the 4x200 meter relay team took 16th place.
The 4x400 meter relay team took ninth place in the prelims, just missing out on a chance at the finals. The 4x800 meter relay team consisting of Dylan Garland, Johnnie Morgan, Race Brant and Cole Ashman finished with a time of 8:24.98, good enough for third place at the meet.
