Woodward-Granger gets first win of the season

The Woodward-Granger boys’ basketball team got its first win of the season on Monday in the first round of the district tournament against Iowa Christian Academy. The Hawks won by a score of 59-39.

The Hawks were led in the scoring column by sophomore Nick Squires who hit six 3-pointers and had 24 points in the game. Tanner Canova, a senior, was the only other Woodward-Granger player in double figures as he had 10 points on a 5-of-7 shooting performance while grabbing five rebounds as well.

Junior Alex Boderman was close to a double-double as he had eight points going 4-of-10 from the field and having a team-high 10 assists. Jake Smiley only had six points but had seven assists in the game.

Smiley also tied with Boderman for a team-high six rebounds.


In their final game before the district tournaments began the Hawks lost to Panorama 70-48. Squires led the Hawks once again in points as he scored 21 points going 7-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point range.

Tre Loge was the only other Woodward-Granger player in double figures as he had 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Loge also had six rebounds, two assists and two steals in the game.

Michael Connor and Marshall Nieland both came off the bench and tied for a team-high three assists apiece.


The Hawks didn’t have any luck against Collins-Maxwell/Baxter either as they lost by a score of 59-39 despite being down only 28-20 at halftime.

Nieland came off the bench and hit two 3-pointers and led the team in scoring with 12 points before picking up his fifth foul and fowling out.

Boderman went 0-for-4 from 3-point range but was 4-of-12 overall and had 10 points and a team-high four rebounds. Boderman also led the Hawks with three assists in the game.

Connor, Loge and Cole Ashman all had four fouls apiece.
